WASHINGTON — (WMAL) The Safeway supermarket in Georgetown is holding a chicken wing eating contest in honor of National Chicken Wing Day.

A group of competitive eaters from the D.C. Metro area will face off at 12:30pm on Wednesday to determine who can eat the most pounds of chicken wings in five minutes.

Michael Longo, one of the competitors, ate 120 chicken wings in a previous ten minute competition and expects to eat at least 50 wings at this one.

“It’s going to come down to speed,” Longo said. “It’s about how much you can put down in five minutes.”

Chicken wings can pose a choking hazard if the bones are consumed with the meat, but Longo said that choking can be avoided with proper technique.

“With chicken wings it’s more technique. It’s more about separating the meat from the bones as fast as you can.”

Safeway will also give out free chicken wings to spectators.
