  • Virginia legislature returned to Richmond on Monday
  • Va. Senate rejects GOP pick for state Supreme Court. (Richmond Times Dispatch) – Senate Democrats, responding to the refusal of Republican legislators to elect Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s recess appointment to the Supreme Court of Virginia, blocked the GOP’s choice to replace her Monday, further widening the partisan rift between the two parties controlling the executive and legislative branches.
  • Virginia lawmakers at a standstill over redistricting. While public hearings had been scheduled by the House as they worked on a new map, the Senate adjourned, essentially ending the redistricting process for now. Lawmakers have until September 1 to come up with new congressional lines. If lawmakers and the governor cannot come to a compromise, federal judges could impose their own boundaries as they have done in other states.
