WASHINGTON — (WMAL) DC council members are hosting a PARK(ing) Day event today, to support the conservation of natural space in the District.

Thirteen council member parking spaces outside the John A. Wilson Building will be converted to miniature parks, with plants and grass.

The DC Council is partnering with the Maryland and DC Chapter of the Nature Conservancy as well as Washington Parks & People to promote the local upkeep of parks and nature.

Eric Aldritch, Spokesman for the Nature Conservancy said that the project is designed to bring attention to the lack of green space in urban environments.

“This is a small, but kind of fun way to bring attention to that,” he said.

PARK(ing) Day is open to the public today from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The annual event started in San Francisco in 2005 but has since grown in popularity.

“There are full exhibits and demonstrations to participate in and to learn from,” Aldrich said.

“Things like how planting trees and offering green infrastructure could help cool down a city. I’m sure DC could benefit from that.”
