WASHINGTON — (WMAL) Former Virginia governor George Allen endorsed Marco Rubio for president on WMAL’s Mornings on the Mall today.

“I think Marco Rubio has the best positive, constructive agenda to get this country moving in the right direction with opportunities for all,” Allen said.

He made the announcement during an interview with Mornings on the Mall hosts Brian Wilson and Lisa Boothe.

“Especially in a state like Virginia you can’t win with just Republicans,” Allen continued, “You need a strong number of independents… and I think Marco can attract independents and young people.”

He also told WMAL that while he appreciated the efforts of all the Republican candidates, Rubio was the only real “embodiment of the American dream.”

Allen was a Republican governor of Virginia from 1994 to 1998 and was a U.S. senator from 2001 to 2007.
