WASHINGTON — (WMAL) Gas prices have fallen to their lowest mark since 2004 this month with the average price in Virginia being just $1.97.

The national average for regular unleaded gas has dropped to $2.17 per gallon according to AAA’s Weekend Gas Watch. The continuous decrease in gas prices this summer has been the result of an abundance of fuel supplies and a decline in the cost of crude oil.

While prices may be below the national average in Virginia, the District of Columbia remains one of the most expensive areas in the United States with prices reaching around $2.44 per gallon. However, gas prices in Washington, D.C. are still down $0.44 from last year.

AAA projects that the cost of gas will continue to remain low for the rest of the summer, but unexpected events like a disruption in supplies or a natural disaster could cause a price increase.
