FAIRFAX, VA — Steve Stombres never asked to be the Mayor of Fairfax, and he says he’s happy to give up his interim job to whoever wins Tuesday’s three-way race to fill the position.

Three City Council members are in the running – Eleanor D. Schmidt, Michael J. DeMarco and David L. Meyer. The winner will fill the vacancy created last fall when longtime Mayor R. Scott Silverthorne was arrested, accused of trying to trade crystal methamphetamine in exchange for access to an orgy with other men at a Tysons Corner hotel. The man Silverthorne allegedly arranged the deal with turned out to be an undercover police officer.

Stormbres says residents are excited to find stability returning to their city government.

“The City of Fairfax is larger than just one person, and our community has come together,” he tells WMAL.

In the wake of the scandal surrounding the former Mayor, several projects that have already been approved for development have been delayed, and Stombres says the new Mayor will have plenty to do right from the start.

“I’m looking forward to turning it over to the next Mayor, and be sure that everything is in good hands as we move forward as a city.

Stombres, who served on the City Council between 2008 and 2014, will step down once a new mayor is sworn in.

Silverthorne, who has not spoken publicly since his arrest, is scheduled to go on trial on Wednesday.
