Organizer: Women’s Strike Not About Trump, Except It’s All About Trump

An International Women’s Strike (IWS) is planned for March 8th. Listen as Larry spoke with organizer Margaret Prescod about the feminist movement and what women are hoping to achieve through the strike.

During the interview, O’Connor asked Prescod if the strike was politically motivated. Read the exchange below:

O’Connor: So why weren’t you marching against Obama and Clinton then? I mean, that’s what I’m not understanding. You’re right all these things …

Prescod: This isn’t a march against a particular administration.

O’Connor: Well…

Prescod: If you look at the platforms in the United States, as well as the platform internationally, you won’t see that what this strike is about is focusing on Donald Trump and his administration.

O’Connor: Margaret Prescod, now hold on. I’m reading your website right now and it says, “we went on strike on January 20th and 21st for the inauguration and now we’re doing it again”. So that tells me if it was done for the inauguration, it tells me it has something to do with President Trump.

Prescod: And you know what? There are a lot of women, not all women because of course Trump has his supporters, but there are a lot of women who are very upset. I mean, there’s a reason that so many of these women were wearing those pink hats. Did you see photos of thousands of women wearing those pink hats?

O’Connor: Oh, I saw. You know, you’re talking to Washington, D.C. right now. They were all over my neighborhood. And by the way, I wasn’t surprised…

Prescod: We don’t like the man who’s President of the United States now, talking about grabbing women’s you know what, and this type of derogatory language and behavior. And you know what, a lot of women who came out for the Women’s March on Washington, even though the theme was women’s rights or human rights, a lot of them carried signs about Trump and were concerned about Trump. And I’m sure that’s going to happen here too.
