Former St. Mary’s County Church Pastor Pleads Guilty to Stealing $76,000 in Charity Funds

MARYLAND — (WMAL) Former St. Mary’s County pastor John Mattingly plead guilty Tuesday to bank fraud for stealing checks meant for charity from the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.

Mattingly, 71 of Charlotte Hall, deposited 500 checks from parishioners intended for charity into a personal account from 2006-2010. He then transferred the funds into his retirement account.

The amount totaled at least $76,0000.

If the Court accepts the plea deal, Mattingly will face six to 18 months of home detention.

His sentencing is scheduled for July 31.
