WASHINGTON (WMAL) – After five years representing Montgomery County on the Maryland House of Delegates and a run for governor in the 2014 Democratic Primary, Heather Mizeur is now trying to teach people about effective civic engagement in part through her new podcast called Soul Force Politics. The podcast is part of her Miz Maryland Soul Force Politics non-profit.

“We have way too much division in our country right now, and politics seems to be very much an exasperating thing for people, and it doesn’t have to be,” Mizeur said.

The podcast is part of her Miz Maryland Soul Force Politics non-profit, which she said is based on her own political creed that people want to know that candidates are for something, not just against someone.

She said people have lost the ability to come to a dialogue with an understanding that a difference of opinions is okay. She hopes her podcast teaches people to approach each other with the understand that everyone has a soul, and everyone is connected.

When she says everyone has a soul, she isn’t talking about religion but rather each person’s individual spirit.

In an upcoming episode she has an hour-long conversation with Republican Gov. Larry Hogan about many topics, including ones they vehemently disagree on.

“We model how you can have that kind of disagreement without being disagreeable,” Mizeur said.

Despite the seemingly ever-growing partisan divide on Capitol Hill and around American, Mizeur is confident she can effect change and teach people how to speak to each other effectively.

Mizeur’s first podcast features her good friend and Grammy award-winning singer Melissa Etheridge. Hogan and Retired Democratic Sen. Barbara Mikulski will be featured in upcoming episodes.
