Florida Democrat Wilson no friend of veterans, vote record shows (Fox News)

VoteSmart.org sheds light on Rep. Frederica Wilson’s voting record on the issue.

The Florida Democrat who criticized President Donald Trump this week for being “insensitive” toward the widow of a U.S. soldier slain in Africa might be facing similar criticism herself.

It turns out that U.S. Rep. Frederica Wilson has frequently voted against measures intended to help veterans and their families, according to VoteSmart.org, a vote-tracking site whose founding board members included former presidents Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford.

The measures that Wilson opposed included a bill that could have ensured that families of four soldiers slain in Afghanistan in 2013 received death and burial benefits. [Read More]

NFL endorses criminal-justice reform bill in the midst of anthem debate (The Washington Post)

The National Football League, still in political crosshairs over whether players should take a knee during the national anthem, is throwing its weight behind another cause in Washington’s debate over racial inequality: criminal justice reform.

The NFL’s spokesman said on Monday that the league has decided to endorse a bipartisan bill to reduce mandatory minimum sentences for low-level drug offenders, eliminate “three-strike” provisions that require life sentences and give judges more latitude to reduce sentences for certain low-level crimes.

“We felt that this was an issue over the last months, as we have continued to work with our players on issues of equality and on issues of criminal justice reform, that was surfaced for us, and we thought it was appropriate to lend our support to it,” NFL spokesman Joe Lockhart said Monday during a conference call with reporters. Appeals court finds Bladensburg ‘Peace Cross’ violates Constitution (Fox 5 DC)

A federal appeals court has found that a towering cross on a Maryland state highwaymedian just outside Washington violates the U.S. Constitution.

A three-judge panel of the 4th U.S. Circuit of Appeals in Richmond ruled Wednesday that the 92-year-old monument known as the Bladensburg ‘Peace Cross’ amounts to government sponsorship of a particular religion. The court overturned a 2016 ruling that said it was meant mostly as a secular commemoration of World War I.

The American Humanist Association said the 40-foot (12-meter) tall cross endorses Christianity while ignoring non-Christian veterans. [Read More]

Trump blasts ‘Fake Media’ for ignoring Russia uranium deal sealed ‘with Clinton help’ (Fox News)

President Trump on Thursday accused the “Fake Media” of ignoring new details about the 2010 approval of a controversial uranium deal with a Russian company, amid scrutiny of potential “conflicts of interest” for Hillary Clinton and the Obama administration.

“Uranium deal to Russia, with Clinton help and Obama administration knowledge, is the biggest story that Fake Media doesn’t want to follow!” Trump tweeted.

A day earlier, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, vowed at a public hearing to “get to the bottom of this issue.” This was as The Hill reported that the FBI had evidence as early as 2009 that Russian operatives used bribes, kickbacks and other dirty tactics to expand Moscow’s atomic energy footprint in the U.S. — yet the Obama administration approved the uranium deal benefiting Moscow anyway. School replaces Halloween costume parade with “Black and Orange” spirit day (WVIB)

An elementary school in Massachusetts has cancelled its annual Halloween costume parade, replacing it with something else.

Boyden Elementary School, in Walpole, will instead have a “Black and Orange” spirit day, according to Boston CBS contributors WBZ-TV.

“I think it’s a lot of political correctness,” one woman said. “I think it’s a shame because Halloween is the funnest day of the year next to Christmas for children.”

Another person said ““Put a costume on. Parade down the street. Let them have their little time. Why do you have to turn it into something political?”

The school’s principal released a message to parents, saying “…the costume parade is out of our ordinary routine and can be difficult for many students. Also, the parade is not inclusive of all the students and it is our goal each and every day to ensure all student’s individual differences are respected.” [Read More]
