This much is certain about Tuesday’s Republican U.S. Senate primary: The winner – no matter which candidate it is – will present a starkly different choice for voters in November than Sen. Tim Kaine, a Democrat seeking his second six-year term.
Republicans will be choosing one of three men: Corey Stewart, a Prince William County Board chairman and former Trump campaign official who relishes firing insults at opponents; Del. Nick Freitas, a two-term state legislator, who says his military combat record sets him apart; and E.W. Trump’s Man in Berlin (New York Times)
His confirmation as ambassador to Germany took a while, but when Richard Grenell arrived in Berlin in May he wasted no time riling up his new hosts. On his first day on the job, he tweeted that German companies doing business in Iran should “wind down operations immediately” because President Trump had decided to unilaterally withdraw from the painstakingly negotiated nuclear deal with Iran.
Germans were not amused by an ambassador telling them what to do, but that hardly deterred our man in Berlin. What he did next was to give an outrageous and insulting interview over the weekend to Breitbart, summarized thus by the alt-right mouthpiece: “Trumpian U.S. Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell has expressed great excitement over the wave of conservatism in Europe, saying he wants to ‘empower’ leaders of the movement.” [Read More]

House Speaker Paul Ryan said he supports a recent assessment by Rep. Trey Gowdy that the FBI acted properly when it used an informant to speak to members of President Trump’s campaign team.
And Ryan told reporters Trump should not pardon himself.
Gowdy, chairman of the House Oversight Committee, said on Fox News last week, “I am even more convinced that the FBI did exactly what my fellow citizens would want them to do when they got the information they got and that it has nothing to do with Donald Trump.” [Read More]
