New Documents Suggest The Steele Dossier Was A Deliberate Setup For Trump

A trove of recently released documents sheds further light on the scope and logistics of the information operation designed to sabotage an American election. Players include the press, political operatives from both parties, and law enforcement and intelligence officials. Their instrument was the Steele dossier, first introduced to the American public two years ago.A collection of reports compiled by former British spy Christopher Steele, the dossier is now engraved in contemporary U.S. history. First marketed as bedrock evidence that Donald Trump colluded with Russia to win the 2016 election, the dossier’s legitimacy took a hit after reports showed the Hillary Clinton campaign paid for the work. Trump warns shutdown could last ‘years,’ says he may declare ‘national emergency’ to build border wall (FOX News)

President Trump stood firm Friday on his demands for a border wall after the second White House meeting with congressional leaders this week broke up with no apparent deal, warning Democrats the partial government shutdown could last “years” and saying he could even declare a “national emergency” to bypass Congress if necessary.

“We can call a national emergency [to build a border wall] because of the security of our country,” Trump told reporters in the Rose Garden, during a lengthy and impromptu press conference.

Eleanor Holmes Norton again proposes bill to make DC the 51st US state (Washington Examiner)

House Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, D-D.C., again introduced a bill to make Washington, D.C., the 51st state.

The nonvoting delegate in Congress introduced the bill as her first of the 116th Congress, and it quickly drew 151 cosponsors, according to a press release from her office.

Statehood for Washington, D.C., an overwhelmingly Democratic enclave, would almost certainly give the party an additional House member and two new senators. House Committee on Oversight and Reform Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., committed to holding a hearing and markup on the Washington, D.C. Admission Act in 2019, according to the news release. Trump ponders ’emergency’ powers to build border wall: ‘I can do it if I want’ (The Washington Times)

President Trump said Friday he could declare a national emergency on the border and order his government to build fencing without needing to go to Congress for additional funding.

“I can do it if I want,” he said, adding, “I may do it.”

He said he’s still interested in trying to get a deal done with Congress on funding his border wall plans, but he made clear he hasn’t foreclosed other options for erecting the barrier he promised voters in 2016 would be built and paid for by Mexico.

Mr. Trump last month had raised the prospect of declaring an emergency and asking the Defense Department to construct barriers outside of the normal congressional appropriations process. [Read More]
