Senate Democrats from shutdown central call for ‘block’ of all bills that don’t open government (Washington Examiner)

Two Democratic senators on Sunday urged their colleagues to “block” consideration of all bills not related to the partial government shutdown until the Senate vote on legislation passed by the House that could end a stand-off over border security funding.

Sens. Chris Van Hollen and Ben Cardin, both from Maryland where many federal employees impacted by the shutdown live, called on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., to allow for a vote.

“Senate Democrats should block consideration of any bills unrelated to opening the government until Sen. Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans allow a vote on the bipartisan bills the House passed to open the government. Mitch, don’t delay. Let’s vote!” tweeted Van Hollen, who is the ranking member of the Budget Committee. [Read More]

Ginsburg missing Supreme Court arguments for 1st time (AP)

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is missing arguments for the first time in more than 25 years as she recuperates from cancer surgery last month, the Supreme Court said.

Ginsburg was not on the bench as the court met Monday to hear arguments. It was not clear when she would return to the court, which will hear more cases on Tuesday and Wednesday, and again next week.

Court spokeswoman Kathy Arberg said the 85-year-old justice is continuing to recuperate and work from home after doctors removed two cancerous growths from her left lung on Dec. 21. [Read More]

Deadly weekend in DC as police investigate 5 homicides (FOX 5 DC)

The first weekend of the new year was deadly in the District as police investigate five homicides that were reported since Saturday.

The most recent killing was reported Sunday in the 800 block of Varnum Street in the Northwest. Officers say a person was shot and killed just before 11 p.m. Police are looking for two suspects in connection with the shootings. [Read More]

Prince George’s School Board Member Requests Free Meals for Students During Shutdown (NBC Washington)

A school board member in Prince George’s County, Maryland, says he wants the county to give free meals to public school students whose families are affected by the partial government shutdown.

Board of Education member K. Alexander Wallace posted a letter on Twitter Saturday that is addressed to Dr. Monica Goldson, the interim CEO for Prince George’s County Public Schools.

Wallace requests in the letter that school system waive all breakfast and lunch meal fees for students who are not already enrolled in the free meals program until the shutdown is over. [Read More]
