Ginsburg misses Supreme Court arguments for the 1st time (AP)

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is missing arguments for the first time in more than 25 years as she recuperates from cancer surgery last month, the Supreme Court said.

Ginsburg was not on the bench as the court met Monday to hear arguments. It was not clear when she would return to the court, which will hear more cases Tuesday and Wednesday, and again next week.

Court spokeswoman Kathy Arberg said the 85-year-old justice is continuing to recuperate and work from home after doctors removed two cancerous growths from her left lung on Dec. 21. [Read More]

Sandy Evans announces retirement from school board one day before petition filed to remove her (The Fairfax Times)

Sandra “Sandy” Evans, the Fairfax County School Board’s Mason District representative, will not seek re-election next year.Evans’s retirement announcement on Dec. 19 came a day before a group of Fairfax County residents filed a petition with the Fairfax County Circuit Court calling for her removal from the school board.

Signed by 1,307 registered voters from Mason District, the petition argues that Evans’s handling of a student-initiated campaign to change the name of Falls Church’s J.E.B. Stuart High School constituted a “neglect of duty, misuse of office, or incompetence in the performance of duties [that had] a material adverse effect upon the conduct of the office,” according to a press release announcing the filing. Dem. Rep. Denies Responsibility for Mistakenly Labeling Girl’s Murder ‘Hate Crime’ (National Review)

Representative Sheila Jackson Lee (D., Texas) refused to take responsibility Sunday for labeling the murder of a seven-year-old African-American girl a “hate crime” before sufficient evidence materialized to support the claim.

Jackson Lee, who encouraged the public to treat Jazmine Barnes’s murder as a hate crime during a rally days after her death, claimed Sunday that her earlier statements, made before the police arrested and charged an African-American man with the murder, were not irresponsible. [Read More]
