Pelosi asks Trump to reschedule State of the Union address until government shutdown ends (FOX 5 DC)

Speaker Nancy Pelosi has asked President Donald Trump to postpone his State of the Union address to the nation — set for Jan. 29 — until the government reopens.

The White House hasn’t immediately responded to a request for comment about Pelosi’s request, which she made in a letter to the president.

Pelosi says the partial shutdown is raising concerns about security preparations for the speech. The California Democrat notes that the Secret Service and Department of Homeland Security have been without funding for almost four weeks. [Read More]

Ann Coulter: Trump is ‘dead in the water’ if he agrees to reopen government without wall funding (Washington Examiner)

Conservative commentator Ann Coulter said that President Trump is “dead in the water” if he does not secure the funds needed to a build a border wall.

Coulter told HBO that she continues to support the president during the government shutdown and said it raises the profile of the conversation about immigration and national security, especially at the southern border, Newsweek reported Wednesday.

It’s 1 o’clock on a Wednesday afternoon in Wallingford, Connecticut, and about 20 children are watching a screen at the front of the room as they take turns navigating challenges and collecting virtual currency to unlock powers, outfits and pets for their characters.

The game they’re playing has some similarities to the online battle game “Fortnite.” But the kids aren’t fighting one another — they’re racking up points for participation and good behavior in their classroom at Dag Hammarskjold Middle School, where their teacher is presenting a home economics lesson with help from Classcraft, a fantasy-themed educational program. ‘I will not be bullied’: AG nominee Barr defends Mueller’s Russia probe (The Washington Times)

Attorney General nominee William P. Barr promised senators Tuesday that he would refuse to carry out orders to fire special counsel Robert Mueller and defended the ongoing investigation into Trump campaign figures and Russian election meddling, as he sought to assuage concerns that he would be President Trump’s hatchet man.

Mr. Barr said he wouldn’t be “bullied” into bad decisions and promised that the public would see some transparency from the lengthy investigation — though not necessarily Mr. Mueller’s full report.

He rejected Democrats’ suggestions that he automatically recuse himself from overseeing the investigation, saying he would make those decisions after weighing all the considerations. [Read More]
