Virginia lawmaker backs off fast track for impeachment bill (Fox 5 DC)

A Virginia lawmaker on Monday backed off his plans to swiftly introduce an impeachment bill seeking the ouster of the state’s leading black elected official as Democrats struggled to address revelations of past racist behavior and allegations of sexual assault roiling its highest levels of office.

The effort to impeach Democratic Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax was prompted by the emergence of two women who accused him of sexual assault in the 2000s. Fairfax has vehemently denied the claims and called for authorities, including the FBI, to investigate. [Read More]

Will Ocasio-Cortez’s ‘Green New Deal’ even get a vote? (Washington Examiner)

Sixty-seven House Democrats have signed onto the “Green New Deal” resolution offered by rising star Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and they’re all pushing for a vote on the House floor.

But it’s not clear whether or when House Democratic leaders will schedule one.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., hasn’t promised it will get time on the floor, and as of last week, she hadn’t even read the ambitious resolution. [Read More]

Democrats and Open Borders: The Budget Is the Policy (National Review)

The Democratic leadership may be trying to keep its distance from the hard Left’s comically absurd Green New Deal, but it has embraced the “Abolish ICE” agenda. The Washington Post report that Rich linked to makes clear that the Democratic budget negotiators, while shying away from simply guillotining the agency immediately, as their party’s Jacobins have demanded, have simply adopted a different approach to the same goal — starving ICE’s immigration-enforcement functions. Democrats’ cut to immigrant detention centers derails talks to avoid shutdown (The Washington Times)

Negotiators working on a deal to avoid another government shutdown hit an impasse over the weekend after Democrats insisted on cutting the number of beds available at detention centers.

Hopes for a deal by the Friday deadline dimmed, with one key negotiator saying chances were only 50-50 that an agreement could be reached, with Democrats’ new demand further complicating a debate that had previously centered on President Trump’s border wall.

The White House said Sunday that Mr. Trump will build his wall one way or another, but unless lawmakers can resolve their fight, the president might not be able to sign a bill to keep the government open beyond this week’s deadline. [Read More]

REP. ILHAN OMAR GOES ON ANTI-SEMITIC TWITTER RAMPAGE; ADVOCACY GROUP DEMANDS APOLOGY (Grabien)

Democrats’ freshmen class of lawmakers are providing the party with a new source of passion — and a lot of headaches.

A series of tweets sent Sunday night from Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) are another addition for the latter category.

The tweets began after a writer for the Intercept, Glenn Greenwald, posted a story about Rep. Kevin McCarthy “threatening punishment” of Rep. Omar and Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) “over their criticisms of Israel.” (As CNN’s Jake Tapper noted, McCarthy’s comments were actually directed at “what he sees as anti-Semitic rhetoric from Reps. Omar and Tlaib.”) [Read More]
