President Trump announced Friday that he would declare a national emergency to build his proposed Mexico border wall, citing crime and violence as his rationale for a move that allows him to redirect funds toward his top 2016 campaign priority.

Trump’s national emergency declaration over border wall sparks reactions from lawmakers (FOX News)

President Trump’s decision Friday to declare a national emergency on the southern border elicited mixed reactions from members of Congress — mainly from Democratic lawmakers who vehemently disapproved of his decision.

“We’re going to confront the national security crisis on our southern border … one way or the other, we have to do it,” Trump said in the Rose Garden.

Though Congress gave Trump roughly $1.4 billion for border barriers, the amount was well below the $5.7 billion the president has said is required to build a wall. But the president is expected to use his executive authority to use other sources of funding to get a total of $8 billion to build the wall. The White House says Trump plans to tap accounts in the Treasury and Defense departments, but not money earmarked for disaster relief. [Read More]

Coming on the heels of Rep. Ilhan Omar’s (D-Minn.) anti-Semitic statements and subsequent apology, another Democratic politician was forced to apologize for vitriolic statements about Israel. Ibraheem Samirah, a dentist and the Democratic nominee in a special election next week for a seat in the 86th District of Virginia’s House of Delegates, issued a written apology Friday for a slew of statements, made on social media over several years, including one comparing Israel to the KKK and another wishing for the late Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to “burn in hell.” [Read More]

2 Suspects Arrested in Jussie Smollett Case: Police (NBC Chicago)

Two people being questioned in the alleged attack on “Empire” actor Jussie Smollett have been arrested and are now classified as “potential suspects,” police said Friday.

“Detectives have probable cause that they may have been involved in an alleged crime and we are working to corroborate the allegations and investigative timeline as our investigation continues,” Chicago Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said in a statement. [Read More]
