1. Undocumented immigrants in Md. rape friend’s 11-year-old sister on separate occasions

Two undocumented immigrants are accused of raping an 11-year-old girl on different occasions, the common denominator being a friendship with the victim’s older brother. Montgomery County Police have arrested Mauricio Barrera-Navidad, 29, of Damascus, and Carlos Palacios-Amaya, 28, of Gaithersburg, and charged each with second-degree rape. Last month, the victim — now 12-years-old — spoke with a social worker at her middle school in Germantown. Talking through tears, the girl shared the painful details about what both men allegedly did to her.

2. ICE blasts Montgomery Co. for releasing accused felon despite immigration detainer

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is lambasting Montgomery County after jailers knowingly released a 19-year-old undocumented immigrant accused of bringing an AR-15 assault-style rifle onto school property, despite an immigration detainer lodged against the teen.

On Saturday, April 29, Mario Granados-Alvarado, 19, a citizen of El Salvador, allegedly broke into a Rockville police car, snagging a shotgun, AR-15 rifle and ammunition from the vehicle’s trunk. The unmarked Chevy Impala was parked outside of an off-duty officer’s house at the time of the overnight break-in.

On Tuesday, May 2, ICE filed an active immigration detainer with the Montgomery County Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation for Granados-Alvarado. The legal document was cut and dry and customary.

On Wednesday, May 3, Granados-Alvarado posted his $2,000 bond set by a Montgomery County District Court judge. However, instead of abiding by ICE’s pending request, Montgomery County officials let the accused criminal walk out of jail and return to the community.

3. Montgomery Co. violates own policy, releases undocumented immigrant accused of rape

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement says Montgomery County violated its own jail policy last week when it released an undocumented immigrant accused of rape despite an immigration detainer on file.

After leaving Buffalo Wild Wings, Castro-Montejo and the victim walked across the faux-grass plaza to La Tasca, a Spanish, tapas-style restaurant. The victim recalled dancing for a short period of time, but then blacked out. The victim told police her next memories involved vomiting near a hotel elevator, and later, awakening to Castro-Montejo raping her. “Victim A noticed she was naked from the waist down and immediately jumped off the bed and took a shower in the bathroom,” detectives further noted in court documents. “Victim A gathered her clothing quickly and exited the hotel in search of her vehicle.” The victim hastily entered her car, locked the doors and drove straight to Shady Grove Medical Center where medical staff performed a sexual assault forensic exam. A detective with the Special Victims Investigations Division met with the woman and watched as she texted Castro-Montejo about the troubling circumstances of the night before. The victim proceeded to inquire if Castro-Montejo had sexual intercourse with her or if he had stopped after touching her genitals “Oo a little bit of both to be honest,” Castro-Montejo allegedly replied. “I’m sorry… I hope this doesn’t ruin our friendships.” Hours later, authorities filed formal charges of second-degree rape and second-degree assault against Castro-Montejo.

5. Pack of MS-13 members beat Md. man with bat in woods for refusing to join gang

A young man was lured to a patch of woods and violently beaten by a pack of MS-13 members all because he refused to join the street gang, authorities allege in charging documents obtained by ABC7. The case — which dates back to December — was formally filed last month following the arrest of Carlos Sorto-Baires, an undocumented immigrant from El Salvador. The 18-year-old stands accused of a number of serious crimes including kidnapping, first-degree assault and false imprisonment.

The group of approximately 12 men punched, kicked and beat the victim with a baseball bat. The victim reported hearing the men deliberating whether or not to kill him. He also heard a firearm being “racked” repeatedly. Following the ambush, the group reportedly identified itself as Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) and ordered the victim to move out of the neighborhood and never come back or he would risk a worse injury.
