More Than 20 Birds Killed In Rockville House Fire

(Rockville, MD) -- Montgomery County fire officials say nearly two dozen parrots and parakeets were killed in a house fire early Tuesday morning in Rockville. Firefighters responded around 1:30 a.m. to the home in the five-hundred block of Mannakee Street. The residents of the home were running back into the fire to rescue the pets, but firefighters had to pull the residents out of the burning home. Assistant Fire Chief Scott Graham says it appears the fire started in the basement of the home and then spread to the upper level. The home was basically destroyed by the fire. The cause is under investigation. Five people have been displaced. A fire department spokesman says out of the family's 23 pets, just one parakeet survived.
