Big Plans For 150th Anniversary Of Battle Of Manassas

(Manassas, VA) -- Planning for the 150th anniversary of the First Battle of Manassas during the Civil War is progressing.
This week, the Manassas City Council agreed to spend $100,000 dollars on a nine-day commemoration which will take place in 2011.
Virginia Civil War Events Board Chairman Creston Owen says he hopes Prince William County supervisors will help fund the event as early as next month.
The First Battle of Manassas, also known as the First Battle of Bull Run, took place on July 21st, 1861 and was the first major land battle of the Civil War.
Owen says the commemoration will include much more than just a re-enactment, although he says the last time the battle was re-enacted in Manassas was in 1961, marking the centennial of the combat.
He says the 150th anniversary commemoration will be a big deal, attracting a large number of tourists to Manassas.
