John Matthews
Since joining 630 WMAL in 1982, John has covered World leaders and Little League baseball games... chased hurricanes and celebrities... reported live from train wrecks and plane wrecks... and shoveled through more blizzards than he cares to remember! As 630 WMAL's News Director, John now writes many of the newscasts you hear each day on the Grandy and Andy Morning Show, and he's also a regular fill-in anchor throughout the day.
John is also 630 WMAL's resident Disney expert. His travels include more than 50 visits to Walt Disney World in Florida and dozens of trips to Disneyland in California. John's hobby was helpful in 1994, when Disney was planning its now-scrapped theme park in Haymarket, Virginia. His series, "American History – The Disney Version", was honored with broadcasting's Pulitzer Prize, the Alfred duPont-Columbia University Silver Baton.
John has also been honored over the years with numerous individual awards from the Associated Press, Radio-TV News Directors Association and the Society of Professional Journalists. However, his greatest pride comes from 630 WMAL's team efforts in winning the National Edward R. Murrow Award as America's Best Radio News Operation!
John is a lifelong Washingtonian. He lives with his wife and sons in Brookeville, Maryland.
