Bethesda Painting Awards - Call for Artists (Arts and Music)
Location: Bethesda, MD
The Bethesda Painting Awards will award up to $14,000 to four selected painters. the first place winner will receive $10,000; second place, $2,000; third place, $1,000. A "young" artist whose birth date is after February 26, 1980 may also be awarded $1,000. The Bethesda Arts & Entertainment District invites eligible artists to enter the Bethesda Painting Awards. The selected artwork will be on exhibit in June 2010 in downtown Bethesda, MD at the Fraser Gallery.Artists must be 18+ and permanent, full-time residents of MD, VA or D.C.All original 2-D painting will be accepted. Toyland (Theater)
Location: The Puppet Co. Playhouse in Glen Echo Park
Bad ol' Mr. Barnaby (aka "the crooked man") is up to no good, and it's up to Mother Goose, Little Bo Peep and Tom the Piper's son to sing their way to a happy ending. This adaptation of Victor Herbert's musical fantasy includes such familiar pieces as "Toyland" and "March of the Toys,” with costume characters and near-life marionettes."Toyland" will be performed October 16+ November 20,2009 with performances Thursdays and Fridays at 10:00 and 11:30am and Saturdays and Sundays at 11:30am and 1:00pm. It is recommended for PreK-Grade 4 and runs 40 minutes. Tickets are $10.00 with group rates available.On Saturday, November 8, 2009, the 1:00pm performance will be American Sign Language interpreted. The Puppet Co. Playhouse will offer productions for the very young, as part of its "Tiny Tots @ 10:00" program. This program will feature Bob Brown Puppets in a variety of colorful and musical adventures. “Tiny Tot at 10:00” is a program that is designed for young children ages 0-4. A Fantasticks Voyage Scavenger Hunt (Misc)

Arena Stage is thrilled to launch a fun, team activity centered on The Fantasticks. Set for Saturday, Nov. 14, A Fantasticks Voyage will allow teams of up to four to race around D.C., discovering clues and meeting a cast of Fantasticks characters. Teams will have the chance to win tickets to The Fantasticks opening night (Friday, Nov. 27) at the Lincoln Theatre and a restaurant gift certificate for four. Join the fun!
For Love of Children (FLOC) (Volunteering)

Teach a child to dream. Become a tutor. Volunteer with For Love of Children as a one-on-one tutor with a child in reading and math. No experience necessary. Training is provided. Afternoons, evenings, and Saturdays are available. In just 2 ½ hours a week, you can impact a child’s education. You can also refer a child to our educational programs for middle school and high school students. Scottish singer/actor Euan Morton was a hit as the featured performer at this year’s CENTERSTAGE Gala. His stage credits include numerous roles in the UK and New York, including originating the role of Boy George in the musical TABOO in London’s West End (Olivier Award nomination) and then on Broadway (Tony nomination).
