Republicans in the Virginia Senate have stunned Democrats by pushing through a new redistricting map.
On a 20-to-19 vote the GOP won approval of a change in district maps that could improve the party's chances of picking up an additional Senate seat in 2015.
Republicans say their move was simply an effort to correct maps that split communities.
The power play was made possible in the evenly-divided Senate because Democrat Henry Marsh was here in Washington for President Obama's inauguration,
The bill now goes to the House for approval.
