(PRETORIA, South Africa) -- South African Paralympic gold medalist Oscar Pistorius has been arrested in connection with the shooting death of his girlfriend, according to the Mail & Guardian, which cites a report on the Afrikaans-language website Beeld.

Pistorius is a double amputee who has been dubbed the “Blade Runner” because he runs while wearing carbon fiber prosthetic blades.

The report says the 26-year-old was arrested after he shot and killed his girlfriend after mistaking her for a burglar at his home in Pretoria.

Police spokeswoman Sarah Mcirca has confirmed to South Africa media outlets that the victim was shot in the arm and the head.

Pistorius won gold medals in the 4-by-100 meter relay and the 400-meter individual at the 2012 Paralympic Games in London.

He also competed in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.  In doing so, he became the first-ever double amputee to run in the Olympics.
