An Auburn Hills, Michigan company is the first automotive supplier to get approval to test its driverless car on roadways in Nevada.
Continental has been given an Autonomous Vehicle Testing License from the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles.
The supplier has outfitted a VW Passat with the driver assist technology and has completed over 15-thousand miles of testing on the roadways with a driver in place who did not use the wheel or the gas or brake pedals.
Continental officials say they will be able to provide partially automated systems for customers by 2016 and fully automated systems could be available by 2020.
