FAIRFAX — (WMAL) If you’re looking to test driverless cars on congested roads, then Northern Virginia is one of the best places to do it. The Virginia Tech Transportation Institute is looking to see how their automated cars do in the perpetual stop-and-go traffic on the Beltway, 95 and 66, among other roads, starting this week.

“Drivers’ error causes so much congestion in Northern Virginia, on all of our roads,” Fairfax County Board Chairman Sharon Bulova told News Channel 8.  “People who rubberneck, people who aren’t paying attention, they’re texting and driving or whatever they do,” she added.

Driverless cars would make all of that moot.

“If you’re looking for a congested area, sort of like jumping into the deep end of the pool when you’re learning how to swim, this should be a really good test to see how it operates.”

But you won’t find her eager to see how it works.

“I’m a control freak when it comes to driving. I don’t even use cruise control,” she said.
