WASHINGTON — (WMAL) It’s the day the District has been waiting for: Pope Francis will arrive in D.C. this afternoon.

Pope Francis will arrive by plane from Cuba at Joint Base Andrews in Prince George’s County, Maryland at 4 p.m. He will be greeted by a delegation including President Obama and the First Lady.

The pope will then travel by motorcade to the Apostolic Nunciature (or the Vatican embassy) on Massachusetts Avenue, which will be his residence for the remainder of the visit.

Here’s our tip to D.C. drivers: Traffic will be intense this afternoon. Expect rolling roadblocks to and from Joint Base Andrews proceeding the motorcade.

Also be ready for the Mass. Ave. closure to southbound traffic until the pope leaves town. Plan to readjust your commute from today through Thursday.

And if you thought you might be able to catch a glimpse of Francis in the motorcade, don’t get your hopes up. The pope has no public schedule for the day, so the chances of seeing him are slim to none.

Pope Francis’ first appearance will be Wednesday, Sept. 23, at 9:15 a.m. at the White House welcoming ceremony.
