WASHINGTON — (WMAL) Santa isn’t the only one flying across the country today.

According to Daniel Baker, CEO of Flightaware, 21,000 airplanes will fly out of US airports today, bringing travelers to their holiday destinations.

“We’ve seen probably the most mild winter season, or at least holiday season, in recent history, which has been really good news both for air travelers and for airlines,” Baker told WMAL.

In previous years, winter weather has delayed flights and left last-minute travelers hoping for a Christmas miracle.

Thanks to unseasonably warm weather, the number of delayed or cancelled flights this December has been incredibly low.

Baker said that on a typical day 150 flights are cancelled and anywhere from 3,000 to 4,000 are delayed.

Today, travelers can expect even less changes to their plans, a situation that Baker called “an anomaly.”

“You can pretty much set your watch by the day before the holiday… because an ice storm will hit Chicago or a nor’easter will arrive in the Northeast, or something like that,” Baker said. “It just hasn’t been that way this year.”
