LGBT Magazine The Advocate Names DC on its “Queerest Cities” List

In the wake of Friday, June 26, 2015 landmark Supreme Court ruling that allows same-sex couples nationwide to marry, the White House was illuminated in rainbow colors for the evening, a nod to the achievement of the gay rights movement. On Twitter, the official White House account displayed a rainbow-colored avatar of the presidential mansion.

WASHINGTON — (WMAL) Washington, DC has been named the 6th Queerest City in the United States, according to a new study released by LGBT magazine The Advocate.

Matthew Breen, editor-in-chief at the magazine said that the DC is a popular destination for non-heterosexual and non-cisgender people because of its numerous pride events.

He defines “queer” as “lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender people – not just gays and lesbians, which is what typically the ‘gay’ term refers to.”

The Advocate‘s study measures different criteria for their list every year.

Among this year’s criteria were non-discrimination protections for LGBT people, the number of places that went “rainbow” for marriage equality and the location and frequency of LGBT film festivals.

“Washington, DC makes the list on a regular basis,” Breen told WMAL, “It’s number six this year, so it’s great to see our nation’s capital on the list.”

Number one on this year’s list is Hartford, Connecticut, ranking higher than expected when compared to LGBT hotspots like Salt Lake City, Utah and San Francisco, California.
