WASHINGTON (WMAL) — Rising sea levels are set to heavily impact Annapolis, and eventually DC. Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan wants to allocate $1 million to prepare his capital city.
Annapolis saw about four days a year of tidal flooding 50 years ago, but Lisa Craig, Annapolis’ chief of historic preservation, says the city is now seeing tidal flooding about 40 days a year.
“The Union of Concerned Scientists have recognized that there will probably be around 340 to 360 events every single year of tidal flooding within the next 50 years,” Craig told WMAL.
If the budget gets passed, she says that means the city can start prepping.
“We may need to elevate our city streets, some of our buildings–and when we’re saying that, that’s not on stilts it’s on foundation.”
Prepping the city from flooding is not just about protecting the city’s buildings, it’s also about protecting business.
“I don’t think that we want to see the capital city [of Maryland] lost to a disaster, lost to sea-level rise, or basically put out of business by tidal flooding.”
