5am – A/B/C Iowa Results for the Democrats: Did Hillary win or lose Iowa? Clinton, Sanders both winners in Iowa. (CNN) — Did Hillary Clinton win the Iowa caucuses? Did Bernie Sanders? Actually it might not really matter. Clinton staved off the fate she feared most — repeating the caucus outcome of 2008 when Barack Obama unexpectedly and comfortably defeated her, presaging his eventual defeat of her entire candidacy. But whether or not he has eked out a technical win, the Iowa results are a victory for Sanders. The unkempt progressive once thought to only be competitive in the Northeast is now in a neck-and-neck race with the Democratic establishment candidate in the heartland of America. That isn’t just a victory for Sanders. That’s a victory for anyone who believes in democracy. “We are in a virtual tie,” Sanders said with enthusiasm at his speech to his supporters in Iowa Monday evening.

5am – D         What Should Governor O’Malley Do Next?

  • Martin O’Malley suspends bid for the Democratic nomination. DES MOINES, Iowa — Former Maryland governor Martin O’Malley suspended his campaign after a dismal showing in Iowa’s caucuses on Monday. O’Malley never caught on, consistently polling in the single digits nationally and in the early voting states since launching his campaign in May. A data-driven manager during his tenure in Maryland, he aimed to play the true progressive in the race but lost that role to Bernie Sanders. Similarly, O’Malley couldn’t escape the shadow of 2008, when he was one of Hillary Clinton’s most dogged supporters and surrogates. His best moments on the campaign trail instead came when he was railing against the party’s leadership over its debate schedule, which he said was designed to protect Clinton.

5am – E         Brian shares his caucuses coverage.

6am – A/B/C Cruz Wins Iowa: Would You Be Happy If Cruz Were The Nominee?

  • Cruz tops Trump in Iowa; Clinton, Sanders too close to call. DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, a fiery conservative loathed by his own party’s leaders, swept to victory in Iowa’s Republican caucuses Monday, overcoming billionaire Donald Trump and a stronger-than-expected showing by Florida Sen. Marco Rubio. Among Democrats, Bernie Sanders rode a wave of voter enthusiasm to a virtual tie with Hillary Clinton, long considered her party’s front-runner. Cruz’s victory over Trump was a testament to his massive get-out-the-vote operation in Iowa and the months he spent wooing the state’s influential conservative and evangelical leaders.

6am – D         Should Students Telecommute On Snow Days?

  • Could APS Students Telecommute During Snow Days? (ARLNOW.com) –Arlington Public Schools students are off today due to a scheduled teacher grade preparation day. It’s the eighth consecutive weekday off for APS students, who’ve enjoyed one snow day after another since Thursday, Jan. 21. Care-free snow days, however, could eventually become a thing of the past. APS is likely, in the near future, to consider the idea of having students “telecommute” from home when school is cancelled. They would do so from their school-issued computers — APS is in the process of outfitting every high school student with a Macbook Air and every second- through eighth-grader with an iPad. Once every second-grade student and up has a laptop or iPad, teachers could assign homework, reading and online lessons remotely and students could complete it from the comfort of their own homes. Theoretically, at least — some policy changes would be needed, particularly when it comes to expectations for teachers. There’s also the question of whether all APS teachers and families have internet access at home.

6am – E         Critter News: Super Bowl 50: Teddy Bear the porcupine picks the winner. (ABC News) — (NEW YORK) — If this porcupine’s prediction is correct, Peyton Manning will add another Super Bowl ring to his collection after Sunday’s big game. The porcupine, named Teddy Bear, has predicted the winner of Super Bowl 50 and it is Manning’s Denver Broncos over the Carolina Panthers. Teddy Bear, a viral star with over 45,000 Facebook fans and 24,000 YouTube subscribers, has accurately predicted the Super Bowl winner three out of four times. The popular porcupine’s winning streak was broken last year when he picked the Seattle Seahawks over the New England Patriots. The Patriots pulled out a victory in a close game.

7am – A/B     Iowa Results for the Democrats: Did Hillary win or lose Iowa? Clinton, Sanders both winners in Iowa. (CNN) — Did Hillary Clinton win the Iowa caucuses? Did Bernie Sanders? Actually it might not really matter. Clinton staved off the fate she feared most — repeating the caucus outcome of 2008 when Barack Obama unexpectedly and comfortably defeated her, presaging his eventual defeat of her entire candidacy. But whether or not he has eked out a technical win, the Iowa results are a victory for Sanders.

7am – C         Famous US Groundhog Predicts Early Spring. (VOA News) — Weather-watchers across the United States have heard good news: There will be an early spring this year, according to the most famous groundhog in the state of Pennsylvania. February 2 marks Groundhog Day, when traditionally a groundhog known as “Punxsutawney Phil” is makes an appearance above ground, near the cozy tree stump he calls home. Legend has it that if he sees his shadow — i.e., if it is a sunny day — North America is in for six more weeks of winter weather. That means many of Phil’s fans, gathered to witness his formal prediction, may have been glad to see Tuesday’s overcast skies in the town of Punxsutawney. Phil’s appearance came just days after the eastern United States dug out from a record-breaking blizzard. Punxsutawney Phil is the most famous of the furry forecasters, but other U.S. states, as well as Canada, have their own groundhogs to consult. The tradition stretches back to at least 1887. Records show that Phil predicts more winter far more often than he indicates an early spring.
