WASHINGTON (WMAL) — Originally, Montgomery County Police thought six students at the Francis Scott Key Middle School in Silver Spring got sick from drinking some type of alcohol, but they quickly learned what got them sick wasn’t alcohol but rather a bizarre concoction.

“Officers determined that at least one of the students brought in Nyquil, Sprite and Jolly Rancher candy and mixed it all together and was passing it around to other students, which caused some of the students to become ill,” said police spokesman Rick Goodale.

The students went to the school nurse feeling sick around 10 a.m. Friday. The nurse called 911 just to be on the safe side. Six kids were taken to a local hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Goodale said since the students didn’t drink alcohol, there will be no criminal charges filed against them. The school will handle the situation internally.

School spokesman Derek Turner said the principal sent a letter home to family members of the students to let them know what happened.
