Washington — (WMAL) The Washington Monument, which has been closed all weekend, will remain closed on Monday while technicians continue to repair the elevator power supplies.

For the seventh time in a little over a year the Washington Monument has been shutdown for repairs. Power issues impacting the elevator supply were noticed Saturday morning before the monument’s opening.

Mike Litterst, a spokesman for the National Park Service said “an abundance of caution” was taken in closing the monument.

The elevator ride, which takes about 70 seconds to ride up, has previously left visitors stuck 500 feet above ground at observation level. In these instances, the passengers were taken down the interior steps with aid from monument staff.

Litterst says that the monument is set to reopen “as soon as repairs are completed.”
