WASHINGTON — (WMAL) The Smithsonian’s National Zoo is welcoming a new member to the American Trail with the birth of a sea lion pup.

The pup was born on June 26th to Calli, an 11-year-old sea lion.

The pup and mother are currently being monitored by keepers in an off-exhibit area until Calli is ready to introduce the pup to the colony, which includes two other females and the father.

The keepers have yet to be able to determine the sex of the baby sea lion, but have noticed that the pup is nursing, moving, and vocalizing well.

This is the first time in 32-years that a sea lion has been born at the National Zoo.
