WASHINGTON — (WMAL) When Cathy Lanier started with the DC Police department 26 years ago, she was a high school dropout with a GED. Now, after roughly 10 years of leading the department and two masters degrees later that were earned via the force, Lanier is moving on.

In September, she’ll become the head of security for the National Football League.

“What public safety means for the city of Washington, DC is unique. We have some 30 different law enforcement agencies here that work side by side every day.” Lanier said during a news conference Tuesday, “I think the parallel is not much different in going to the NFL. There are multiple teams and multiple owners and stadiums. There’s a lot to go along with making sure that America’s favorite sport is also America’s safest sport for fans and visitors.”

Lanier, whose contract was scheduled to expire in January will continue serving as chief through September 17th.

Mayor Muriel Bowser says an interim Police Chief will be named in the coming days, and the search for a permanent replacement will take place both within the department and outside of it.

Lanier was appointed as Chief in 2006 by then-Mayor Adrian Fenty. She joined the force in 1990.
