  • Hogan issues executive order mandating Md. schools start after Labor Day
  • Montgomery County School Board Opposes Hogan’s Order to Start School after Labor Day. Board president Michael Durso says decision should be left to county. The Montgomery County Board of Education announced Wednesday it strongly opposes Gov. Larry Hogan’s decision to require public schools to open after Labor Day and close by June 15 beginning in the 2017-2018 school year. Calling the executive order signed Wednesday afternoon by Hogan an attempt “to usurp local decision-making around school calendars,” board President Michael Durso said in a statement that “prohibiting schools from starting before Labor Day ignores critical issues faced by schools and the potential negative instructional impact on students. Determining the school calendar is complicated and requires balancing educational requirements, operational issues, and unique community needs all in the interest of students.”

The model, movie star and ex-bantamweight champion explains her point in an exclusive clip from the documentary The Hurt Business: A Deeper Look at MMA. “MMA “really is the most responsible outlet for (aggression),” she says. “It’s a human instinct to fight. If you try to suppress it entirely, and put everyone in a bubble-wrapped society, that’s when people start going nuts and shooting movie theaters. If any of those people that had all of that aggression built up in them had some sort of outlet, I think that we’d have a lot more societal health because of it.”

8am – E         SafeTrack forces Metro and Marine Corps Marathon into another transportation plan. (Washington Post) — Organizers of the Marine Corps Marathon on Wednesday announced changes to this year’s event as a result of Metro’s year-long SafeTrack program, which has eliminated extended closings or early openings for special events. The 41st Marine Corps Marathon is scheduled to start at 7:55 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 30.  Metro has traditionally opened earlier than normal on race day to accommodate runners and spectators, including last year, when service began at 5 a.m. Due to SafeTrack, Metro will not begin service until 7 a.m. this year. The MCM will maintain its 7:55 a.m. start time, but will keep the start line open until 8:55 a.m., a change from previous years. Changes to the course will reduce the time runners spend on Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway. The start time for the Marine Corps 10K has been changed to 9:15 a.m. and the start line for the 10K will be relocated to the Pentagon North parking lot.
