WASHINGTON — (WMAL) Howard County Sheriff James Fitzgerald is stepping down.

His last day on the job will be this Saturday. Fitzgerald will then have 30 days to officially retire and will receive full benefits.

Fitzgerald has been the target of a yearlong investigation by the Howard County Office of Human Rights.

It substantiated alleged racist and sexist comments made by the sheriff.

Earlier today, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan was the latest lawmaker to say Sheriff Fitzgerald should resign.

Fitzgerald became Sheriff in 2006.
