- CNN’s Dana Bash: Trump’s ‘stunning’ threat to jail Clinton was like ‘Stalin or Hitler.’ Among the more astounding moments from Sunday night’s presidential debate was Republican nominee Donald Trump’s threat to “have a special prosecutor” investigate Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton and jail her. CNN’s Dana Bash said after the debate, “Okay, not to sound too corny, but what makes this country different from countries that have dictators in Africa or Stalin or Hitler or any of those countries with dictators and totalitarian leaders is that when they took over, they put their opponents in jail.” “To hear one presidential candidate say — even if it was a flip comment, which it was — ‘You’re gonna be in jail’ to another presidential candidate on the debate state in the United States of America? Stunning, just stunning.”
- Shep Smith Goes Off on Trump Over Debate Performance and Almost ‘Fascist’ Jail Line. Shep Smith had some pretty tough words for Donald Trump over a debate performance that the Fox anchor considered great red meat but basically a sign that the GOP nominee has given up on trying to expand beyond his base. He said Trump’s attacks on Hillary Clinton was “great stuff” for the GOP base––people who’ve hated the Clintons for decades––but those people were already going to vote for him, and as Smith argued, he should have been appealing to suburban women and flat-out didn’t. Wall Street Journal editor Glenn Hall said Trump was attempting to throw a lot at her so he could get his message and a “substantive discussion” out there. Smith was pretty alarmed by Trump’s line about prosecuting and maybe jailing Clinton, saying it’s almost “fascist.” He repeatedly cried that Trump didn’t even try to win over groups he needs to appeal to, or at the very least show contrition for what he said in that recently-leaked audio.
5am – E Montgomery Co. Board of Education votes for earlier school start date. WASHINGTON — Montgomery County’s Board of Education has voted to start classes before Labor Day. Normally that wouldn’t be news, but this year Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan issued an executive order mandating that classes start after Labor Day, so the local school board will have to ask for a waiver. The local school board voted Monday to ask for an exception so classes can start Aug. 28 and end by June 14.
6am – A/B/C Schieffer: Presidential Debate ‘Was Just Disgraceful.’ ST. LOUIS (CBSNewYork) — Bob Schieffer was not a fan of Sunday night’s presidential debate. The CBS News contributor and former “Face the Nation” host called the debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump “disgraceful.” “How have we come to this? This is supposed to be a campaign for the most powerful office of the land. Here we’re marching in women into the hall who supposed to have some relationship with one of the candidate’s spouses. What’s that supposed to prove?” Schieffer said, citing women who claim former President Bill Clinton of sexual assault sitting in Trump’s box at the debate. “I mean this is what they do in Banana Republic. This is the United States of America. “I just hope to God I don’t see another campaign like this one. America can do better than what we have seen here tonight. This was just disgraceful,” Schieffer said.

- Pence emerges in NC with praise, ‘forgiveness’ for Trump. CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Republican vice presidential nominee Mike Pence emerged Monday after a weekend out of the public eye reaffirming his relationship — awkward as it may seem — with Donald Trump. After canceling a weekend campaign appearance and leaving Trump alone to deal with a video of sexually predatory remarks, Pence was campaigning again — and praising Trump’s Sunday debate performance. But even as Pence struggled to clean up a disagreement with Trump on Syria, the Indiana governor — a devout Christian — tried to put Trump’s obscene remarks about women behind him. Importantly, Pence noted, Trump had apologized.
- Paul Ryan said he won’t defend Donald Trump. (CNN) – Washington (CNN) House Speaker Paul Ryan dealt his own party’s presidential nominee a withering blow Monday, telling fellow Republicans he will no longer defend Donald Trump and will instead use the next 29 days to focus on preserving his party’s hold on Congress. In a conference call with members Monday morning, Ryan told lawmakers, “you all need to do what’s best for you and your district,” according to someone who listened to the meeting. Trump responded to the House speaker on Twitter Monday, saying Ryan should focus on other policy areas instead of fighting with the Republican nominee. “Paul Ryan should spend more time on balancing the budget, jobs and illegal immigration and not waste his time on fighting Republican nominee,” Trump said.
6am – E Samsung Tells Consumers to Stop Using Galaxy Note 7. Company asks all telecom carriers and retailers selling Note 7 globally to stop sales and exchanges. Samsung Galaxy Note 7 owners told to turn off device. South Korean tech giant Samsung has urged owners of the Galaxy Note 7 to turn off its high-end smartphone while it investigates new reports of the device catching fire. The firm also said it would stop sales of the phone, and halt production. Samsung recalled 2.5 million phones in September after complaints of exploding batteries, and later insisted that all replaced devices were safe. But there are now reports that even those phones are catching fire. A man in Kentucky said he woke up to a bedroom full of smoke from a replaced Note 7, days after a domestic flight in the US was evacuated after a new device started emitting smoke in the cabin. “Because consumers’ safety remains our top priority, Samsung will ask all carrier and retail partners globally to stop sales and exchanges of the Galaxy Note 7 while the investigation is taking place,” the company said. “Consumers with either an original Galaxy Note 7 or replacement Galaxy Note 7 device should power down and stop using the device and take advantage of the remedies available,” it added. As late as Monday evening a spokeswoman insisted the phones were safe to use. But on Tuesday the company said it would stop Galaxy Note 7 production.

Hogan issued his order for the later start date for schools, declaring that the later start time is good for the state’s economy. Maryland’s Bureau of Revenue Estimates conducted a study in 2013 that stated a later start to the school year could help generate more than $74 million in economic activity in the state. The Maryland State Board of Education is expected to take up the issue of waivers for area school systems later this month.

- Trump’s Va. campaign chair fired after ‘stunt’ outside RNC. WASHINGTON — The Virginia campaign chair for Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump was fired Monday after he led a protest outside of the Republican Party’s national headquarters on Capitol Hill. Corey Stewart, who is the chair of the Prince William County Board of Supervisors and is expected to run for governor next year, told WTOP that he was fired after he refused to shut down the protest, which drew more than two dozen Trump supporters. They were calling on party leaders to continue supporting Trump after a wave GOP lawmakers defected from the campaign this weekend. During the protest, Stewart said he received a note from David Bossie, deputy campaign manager for the Trump team, threatening to fire him if he didn’t end the event. “I refused to do it so he terminated me,” Stewart said. “I’m loyal to Mr. Trump not to any political operative, especially David Bossie, who is essentially an RNC plant and somebody who’s trying to undermine the campaign.” Stewart said Republican National Committee Chair Reince Priebus and House Speaker Paul Ryan are similarly undermining Trump’s election efforts.

- 14 things we learned from WikiLeaks’ new Clinton-related emails. (Washington Examiner/ By Sarah Westwood) — A second batch of emails obtained illegally from the inbox of John Podesta, Hillary Clinton’s campaign chair, offered fresh insight Monday into her team’s handling of the biggest liabilities facing her campaign. The 2,086 emails, released Monday by WikiLeaks, brought the total number of records published through the hack to more than 4,000. Emails posted Friday by the same site contained 77 pages of excerpts from Clinton’s most controversial paid speeches. Clinton dodged a question Sunday evening about the inconsistencies in her political positions that were revealed late last week when WikiLeaks published its first trove of Podesta emails. During the second presidential debate, Clinton focused mainly on the alleged hackers who infiltrated Podesta’s inbox, rather than the contents of the emails within it. “Our intelligence community just came out and said, in the last few days that the Kremlin … are directing the attacks, the hacking, on American accounts to influence our election,” she said. “The Russians hack information, we don’t even know if it’s accurate,” Clinton added. “Believe me, they’re not doing it to get me elected.” WikiLeaks claims to have taken as many as 50,000 emails from Podesta’s inbox, dating back to the 2008 campaign. The insight provided by his emails was largely eclipsed by the firestorm of criticism that followed the release, just hours earlier, of footage capturing lewd comments Donald Trump made to an NBC host in 2005.
8am – B DC tough distracted-driving bill comes up for vote Tuesday. WASHINGTON — It would become the toughest distracted-driving law in the country, if enacted. But D.C.’s three-strikes bill has some problems. The D.C. Council is expected to vote on the bill Tuesday. Drivers who are caught using a handheld device or texting behind the wheel three times in 18 months would lose their license for 30 to 90 days and be fined $200. First-time offenders would be fined $100 and would no longer be able to drop the penalty if they prove they bought a hands-free device. A second offense within 18 months would result in a $150 fine. But the D.C. Police Department doesn’t currently have real-time technology capable of tracking distracted-driving violations — police officers would not know whether a suspected distracted driver is a first-, second- or third-time offender during a traffic stop. So the bill could not go into effect until after such an electronic data system can be implemented.

Joy Behar said that the women who have accused Bill Clinton of a broad range of sexual misconducts are “tramps” during Monday’s broadcast of “The View.” “That’s start with the fact that she was the victim in all this,” noted co-host Whoopi Goldberg of Donald Trump’s decision to bring Juanita Broaddrick, Kathleen Willey and Paula Jones at Sunday night’s presidential debate in St. Louis. “She was the one whom dirty was done, and Donald redid the dirty by reintroducing [inaudible].” “[Clinton] was being nice about the fact that her daughter was in the audience,” she continued, before stating she would have like to see the former secretary of state “apologize to those tramps who have slept with [her] husband.” “Maybe she could have said that.” This isn’t the first time Behar has made rape jokes on air.

- Nats beat the Dodgers 8-3, take 2-1 lead in the NLDS. WASHINGTON — The Washington Nationals rode home runs from Anthony Rendon and Jayson Werth Monday to an 8-3 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 3 of the National League Division Series, giving them a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five. The Washington Nationals face the Los Angeles Dodgers in their NLDS bid. For the third time in as many games, Corey Seager gave the Dodgers a first-inning lead, this time on an RBI double, scoring Justin Turner. But Washington rebounded with a four-run third inning, capped by Anthony Rendon’s two-run shot to left field.
- Tony Romo reportedly ‘healing well and on track’ to return to Cowboys. Tony Romo got some encouraging results from an MRI exam Monday, per media reports. The Cowboys’ quarterback has been sidelined since the preseason with a broken bone in his back, but he could potentially return to his team’s lineup after its Week 7 bye. Dallas resisted putting Romo on the injured-reserve list — let’s take a moment to recall owner Jerry Jones’s “circumsizing the mosquito” line — in the hope that he could make it back even sooner, but the team presumably will be pleased with his progress. The 36-year-old veteran suffered a compression fracture of his L1 vertebra during an Aug. 23 preseason game against the Seahawks. Of course, whenever Romo is fully healed, there could well be some question as to whether he should actually get his job back, given how well rookie Dak Prescott has played in his absence. The rookie out of Mississippi State has completed 107 of 155 passes (69.0 percentage) for 1,239 yards, four touchdowns and zero interceptions, setting an NFL rookie record for most passes without a pick.
