  • Clinton campaign spokeswoman takes shots at Catholics, evangelicals in leaked email exchange. A top spokeswoman for Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign mocked Catholics and evangelical Christians in a 2011 email exchange exposed by WikiLeaks this week. In the exchange reported Tuesday night on Fox News Channel’s “The Kelly File”, Jennifer Palmieri, now the Clinton campaign’s director of communications, says that politically conservative Catholics “think [Roman Catholicism] is the most socially acceptable politically conservative religion. Their rich friends wouldn’t understand if they became evangelicals.” Palmieri was responding to a message from John Halpin, a fellow at the liberal think tank Center for American Progress. Halpin remarked on a magazine article that discussed 21st Century Fox CEO Rupert Murdoch’s decision to raise his children in the Catholic faith. “Ken Auletta’s latest piece on Murdoch in the New Yorker starts off with the aside that both Murdoch and Robert Thompson, managing editor of the [Wall Street Journal], are raising their kids Catholic,” Halpin wrote. “Friggin’ Murdoch baptized his kids in Jordan where John the Baptist baptized Jesus.” “It’s an amazing bastardization of the faith,” Halpin added. “They must be attracted to the systematic thought and severely backwards gender relations and must be totally unaware of Christian democracy.” The exchange was included in a batch of Clinton adviser John Podesta’s hacked emails. Podesta was copied on the exchange between Palmieri and Halpin, but did not comment.

5am – D         WikiLeaks and Judicial Watch Update

5am – E         Comeback falls short, Nats eliminated by Dodgers in Game 5.  WASHINGTON — After leading the Los Angeles Dodgers for six innings in Game 5 of the National League Division Series, the Washington Nationals saw baserunnings blunders and a bullpen implosion sink their 2016 season at Nationals Park Thursday night in a 4-3 loss. Their late comeback attempt came up just shy in the ninth inning, where they left the potential tying and winning runs on base. It marked the third time in five years that Washington has been eliminated in the opening round of the playoffs following a National League East Championship, and the club’s second Game 5 home loss. The game turned on back-to-back pitches — the final one of the sixth inning and first one of the seventh. With two outs and Jayson Werth at first in the bottom of the sixth and the Nationals ahead 1-0, Ryan Zimmerman lofted a double into the left field corner. Andrew Toles cut the ball off, but third base coach Bob Henley inexplicably waved Werth home, where he was thrown out by a mile at the plate, not even attempting a slide.

6am – A/B/C Study: Women Prefer Their Smartphone To Their Partner. PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Women spend more time on their smartphones than they do with their partners according to a new study. According to the study, women spend 12-hours more a week checking emails, sending texts, or surfing social media than they do with their loved one. Researchers also found that if people are unable to be on their phones, it leads to stress, anger and panic.  A fifth of those surveyed said it would be harder to be without a phone for a week than their partner.

6am – D         INTERVIEW — TREVOR MATICH — Redskins elite long snapper, WMAL’s Redskins analyst and Comcast SportsNet co-host

  • Redskins-Eagles: Key matchups to follow Sunday at FedEx Field
  • Jordan Reed diagnosed with fifth concussion; Redskins won’t rule him out Sunday.
  • Redskins’ Josh Norman: I’ll play through pain in hand if needed

6am – E         Bill Clinton Accusers Tell Hannity Nobody in the Media Has Reached Out to Them.  (Mediaite) – As the media is fixated on groping and sexual assault allegations against Donald Trump, Sean Hannity hosted Juanita Broaddrick, Paula Jones, and Kathleen Willey. All three women have made sexual assault and rape allegations against Bill Clinton, and Hannity asked them, “Considering [what] is in the news today with Donald Trump, has the mainstream media been receptive to asking you three about your stories?” All three said no. When Hannity said “nobody called you,” they all affirmed the sentiment. Broaddrick said, “Not until we went into the Trump spin room.” Hannity also asked them if that “reeks of politics.” They all said yes.

7am – A         INTERVIEW – BRET BAIER – Anchor of Special Report weekdays at 6 pm and on Sundays at 8 pm on Fox News Channel

  • Bret will be anchoring “O’Reilly Factor” and “Fox News Sunday.”
  • The upcoming presidential debate, moderated by Fox News Channel’s Chris Wallace, will take place on Wednesday, October 19 at 9:00 p.m. ET.

7am – B         Critter News:

  • Man tries to smuggle 11 giant crabs onto plane at McCarran Airport. LAS VEGAS (KTNV) – There have been some strange things moving through McCarran International Airport, including the latest — 11 giant crabs. McCarran Airport officials say a man tried to smuggle the crabs onto a Delta plane. The Transportation Security Administration noticed the suitcase was moving so they checked it out and uncovered the crabs. A Delta worker called the Nevada SPCA and asked them if they would take the crabs. “I have a strange question, we got some crabs and we’re wondering if you guys can accept them, and I’m like of course!” SPCA worker Lara Rodriguez said. “We’re going to accept them.” The workers at the SPCA were picturing little hermit crabs, not these giant land crabs. “I was a little shocked when I picked them up cause they were bigger than I expected,” Rodriguez said. The shelter took seven of the crabs because four died after their trip in the suitcase. It is unknown what happened to the man who smuggled the crabs.
  • London Zoo gorilla escape: Born Free wants ‘urgent inquiry’ (BBC) — Media caption”There was no danger”, London Zoo’s Malcolm Fitzpatrick said. He added Kumbuka was a “gentle giant.” An “urgent inquiry” is needed after a male gorilla escaped from its enclosure at London Zoo, say conservationists. The western lowland silverback’s escape did not endanger the public but it “could have ended very differently”, the Born Free Foundation warned. Despite it only getting into the secure keepers’ area, the organisation said it was a “startling reminder” of the risks of keeping wild animals in captivity. The zoo is investigating and said the gorilla was a “gentle giant”. London Zoo is open to visitors but the gorilla enclosure remains closed for now.
  • Bryce Harper pays tribute to Harambe before do-or-die Game 5. As the woke among us know, fellow primate Harambe may have been summarily executed in his zii enclosure for nothing more than the crime of babysitting. Still affronted by the alleged assassination of the world’s most beloved Western lowland gorilla, Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper paid righteous tribute to our hero before Game 5 of the NLDS against the Dodgers. Please regard …Yes, that is indeed the image of Harambe covering the knob of Harper’s implement during batting practice.

7am – C         US in Yemen: If you threaten us, we’ll respond. Washington (CNN)Hours after the US struck three radar installations in Yemen in response to attempted attacks on a US Navy destroyer, Pentagon officials made clear they’ll hit back again if needed and Iran moved its own warships into nearby waters. “We want to make crystal clear if you threaten our forces, if you threaten our ships, we’ll respond,” Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook said Thursday. He described the missile launches against the USS Mason as “a response to direct threats to our people, to our ships and we responded to that threat and we’ll respond again.” Also Thursday, the Iranian navy deployed two warships into the Gulf of Aden in order to protect commercial vessels against pirates, according to the Tasnim News Agency, an Iranian news service with close ties to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps. “With regard to the Iranian navy activities, I’ll leave it to the Iranians to describe the disposition of those ships,” Cook said. “We operate in those waters all the time.”

  • INTERVIEW — NEWT GINGRICH – Former Speaker of the House and author of new novel “TREASON”
  • BOOK SIGNING at the BARNES & NOBLE in Fair Lakes Promenade in Fairfax, Virginia at 1 PM ON SATURDAY
  • ABOUT NEWT’S NEW BOOK “TREASON”: The world’s master terrorist, known only as the Falcon, has infiltrated Washington’s highest corridors of power, threatening the very existence of our democracy in this realistic tale of modern day TREASON. Major Brooke Grant has been waging war against terrorism since her parents were murdered during 9/11, keenly aware that her enemy transcends borders. But a coordinated attack on the president at the funeral of a Washington power broker leads her to a terrifying revelation: the enemy is closer than she’d ever imagined and is hiding in plain sight. The Falcon has gained a weapon no terrorist has ever wielded before: an American-born traitor burrowed inside the U.S. government itself.

8am – A         Virginia Election News:

  • GOP leader: Fire Virginia’s elections chief. (Daily Press) – A top Republican legislator called Thursday for the ouster of Virginia’s highest elections official less than a month before the Nov. 8 presidential elections. Del. Tim Hugo, chairman of the House Republican Caucus, said during a lengthy legislative hearing on election logistics that Gov. Terry McAuliffe should replace Virginia Department of Elections Commissioner Edgardo Cortés “quickly, with competent and nonpartisan leadership.” “I think the root of the problem is integrity,” Hugo told Cortés as the commissioner stood at a podium during a joint hearing of the House and Senate election committees. “We’re having this hearing, basically, because of you.” The McAuliffe administration’s effort last year to end a requirement that voters check a box affirming they are citizens, in addition to signing a statement that attests the same thing, seemed like sneak attack, with little advance notice given before a public hearing, Hugo said. A number of Republicans expressed concern that there’s no citizenship check for voter registration. Voters affirm their citizenship, and lying about it is a felony, but there’s no database of all U.S. citizens to check, and not everyone has easy access to a birth certificate or other proof of citizenship. A U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services database of noncitizens can’t be queried without very specific information that elections officials don’t typically have access to, Cortés said.
  • Trump’s Campaign Is ‘Pulling Out of Virginia’ (NBC News) —  Donald Trump’s campaign is “pulling out of Virginia,” a move that stunned staff in the battleground state, three sources with knowledge of the decision told NBC News. The decision came from Trump’s headquarters in New York and was announced on a conference call late Wednesday that left some Republican Party operatives in the state blindsided. Two staffers directly involved in the GOP’s efforts in Virginia confirmed the decision.
  • Trump Campaign Denies Report That It Has Abandoned Virginia. RICHMOND– (WMAL) The Trump campaign is denying reports that they pulled out from Virginia, despite signs that it switched its focus to other states. Trump’s campaign, however, released this statement today: “We remain absolutely committed to winning in Virginia. While we’re reallocating some of our staff strategically to accommodate early voting in nearby priority states such as North Carolina, our campaign leadership and staffing remains strong in Virginia. Together with the RNC and the state Party, we will have all the resources we need to re-take the Commonwealth at the Presidential level in November, as historically early voting in Virginia is much less of a focus for both parties than in some other states such as North Carolina. Virginians are tired of the same old corruption and double-talk from decades-long Washington insiders like Hillary Clinton, and will vote for change in November.”

8am – B         Alex Trebek Makes Fun Of Jeopardy Contestant’s Music Preference. Alex Trebek had harsh words for one “Jeopardy” contestant on Wednesday night’s episode. The TV show host couldn’t help but make a snide remark when librarian Susan Cole described her favorite genre of music: Nerdcore. “[Nerdcore is] rapping about the things [nerds] love,” the legislative librarian from Bowie, Maryland told Trebek. “Video games, science-fiction, having a hard time meeting romantic partners. It’s really catchy and fun.” Trebek wasted no time firing back, “Losers, in other words.”

8am – C         Metro board members don’t see light at the end of the SafeTrack tunnel.  ‘Where is the light?’ frustrated Metro board member asks of system’s grim outlook

Metro board member Malcolm Augustine was defiant in a board meeting Thursday morning after staff members gave a presentation on the transit agency’s financial woes.  Committee Chairman Michael Goldman moved to accept Metro’s projection of a $275 million budget shortfall, so board members could consider possible strategies to address the gap. But Augustine, who represents Prince George’s County, was not satisfied with that course of action.

8am – D         INTERVIEW — FRED FROMMER – author of ‘You Gotta Have Heart,’ a history of Washington baseball, and head of the sports business practice at the Dewey Square Group.”

  • Comeback falls short, Nats eliminated by Dodgers in Game 5. WASHINGTON — After leading the Los Angeles Dodgers for six innings in Game 5 of the National League Division Series, the Washington Nationals saw baserunnings blunders and a bullpen implosion sink their 2016 season at Nationals Park Thursday night in a 4-3 loss.

8am – E         Obama decries ‘wild west’ media landscape. Pittsburgh (AFP) – President Barack Obama on Thursday decried America’s “wild, wild west” media environment for allowing conspiracy theorists a broad platform and destroying a common basis for debate. Recalling past days when three television channels delivered fact-based news that most people trusted, Obama said democracy require citizens to be able to sift through lies and distortions. “We are going to have to rebuild within this wild-wild-west-of-information flow some sort of curating function that people agree to,” Obama said at an innovation conference in Pittsburgh. “There has to be, I think, some sort of way in which we can sort through information that passes some basic truthiness tests and those that we have to discard, because they just don’t have any basis in anything that’s actually happening in the world,” Obama added.
