WASHINGTON — (WMAL) After 71 years, the Chicago Cubs have reached the World Series, and no one is more excited than the local Chicago Cubs fan club.

The D.C. Chicago Cubs Meetup Group started in 2007 with about 100 members, and now includes 562 cubs fans from all over the D.C. Metro Area. Members of the club meet about once a month to celebrate and support the Chicago Cubs at local bars.

Most of the members are Chicago natives, but there are exceptions. Todd Baldwin, an organizer of the fan club, grew up in New York and has spent the last 27 years living in D.C.

Baldwin believes that the group is so successful because “there’s only so much you can get from twitter and the Internet, the virtual meeting, and people really want to meet in person. There’s something about cheering on a team in a crowd.”

Not only has it been 71 years since their last World Series appearance, but it’s been 108 years since their last World Series title. The Cubs face the Cleveland Indians, who haven’t won a World Series title since 1948 and made their last World Series appearance in 1997.
