5am – D         Voting News:

  • Thousands take advantage of early voting in DC, Virginia. WASHINGTON – Early voting began over the weekend for residents in Washington D.C. and Virginia and the turnout has been very high as they begin to decide who will become the 45th President of the United States along with other local races. Early voting in the nation’s capital began on Saturday and a record number of voters came out and set a record previously set in 2012.  In Virginia, absentee voting began on Sunday. Fairfax County said that over 42,000 people have cast their in-person absentee ballot so far, which is over 15,000 more than 2012 with 15 days remaining until Election Day.
  • Damn! Thanks to Early Voting, 99% More of Florida’s Latinos Have Already Voted Than in 2012. As early voting begins in Florida, Hillary Clinton is polling higher than ever with Latinos. Hillary Clinton’s campaign has marked a whopping 99 percent increase in Latino voting in Florida compared to where she polled in 2012, reported Buzzfeed. 133,000 Hispanics have already cast their ballots in the state, which could really aid her to win the key swing state. Latinos made up 17 percent of the state’s electorate in 2012, and these rising numbers mark a new advantage for the democratic ballot.
  • Early Voters From Amarillo Are Saying Their Votes Were Changed On the Ballot. Potter County Judge Nancy Tanner released a statement this morning. It said, “There is nothing wrong with any of the machines we use for voting. They do not flip your vote. They do not flip parties. Humans do that.” It goes on to talk about the situation in Canyon: “There was one incident in Randall County where a voter voted straight ticket and when they hit the vote button, it flipped parties…The machine was then checked and nothing was wrong with the machine.” Original story: Early voting for the 2016 election started today (Monday, October 24th). The people of Potter and Randall County are taking this opportunity to skip the long lines that always file out of the voting locations on Election Day. It’s common to see pictures of the “I Voted!” stickers on social media. It’s not as common to see the stories I’ve been seeing today. A voter from Canyon posted the experience she had while voting. Apparently, when she chose the straight Republican option, the ballot selected Clinton/Kaine instead of Trump/Pence.
  • Watchdog Rallies Citizens to Fight Voter Fraud in Virginia. Judicial Watch will train, deploy poll watchers after hundreds of illegally registered voters uncovered. A conservative watchdog group announced Monday that it will train volunteers to monitor polling places on Election Day throughout Virginia, where hundreds of non-citizens have been shown to be on the voter rolls. Judicial Watch Election Integrity Project leader Robert Popper, a former deputy chief of the Voting Section in the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, will take charge of the project.

5am – E         Your dog probably dreams about you: Sleeping pooches think lovingly about their owners’ faces or smells. (Daily Mail) — If you are a dog owner, you will be familiar with the sight of your pet scrunching up its nose, moving its legs or even barking in its sleep. At the end of a long day running around fields or sniffing your neighbour’s gardens, it is tempting to wonder what your dog is dreaming about. But your four-legged friend is most likely to be dreaming about you, according to an expert. Dr Deirdre Barrett, a clinical and evolutionary psychologist at Harvard Medical School, told People  that dogs are likely to dream about what happened to them during the day – much like humans.

6am – A/B/C To avoid SIDS, infants and parents should share a room, report says.  (CNN) For at least the first six months of their lives, infants should be sleeping in the same room as their parents, but not the same bed, according to a new report from the American Academy of Pediatrics. The academy recommends children sleep on separate surfaces within the same room, such as a crib, but never on a soft surface, armchair or couch. Optimally, infants should sleep in the same room as parents up to age 1, the organization said. The aim is to reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome, known as SIDS, and other forms of infant death that can occur when a baby is sleeping, such as suffocation. These types of death among infants are collectively known as sleep-related infant deaths, or sudden unexpected infant deaths. “The whole phenomenon of SIDS implies that we don’t know 100% what is responsible for the death, but we have theories,” said Dr. Lori Feldman-Winter, member of the Task Force on SIDS and co-author of the report. These theories include that a baby’s brain may not be developed enough to regulate respiration combined with an environment — such as soft furnishings — that aid asphyxia or nasal obstruction and simply that certain infants may just be more vulnerable due to genetics or physical traits.

6am – D         INTERVIEW — NATE ANDERSON – Concerned Veterans for America National Field Director and former Green Beret in the Army Special Forces

  • U.S. Soldiers Told To Repay Thousands In Signing Bonuses From Height Of War Effort. In most cases, when an employer pays a signing bonus to attract new workers, that payment is understood to be essentially unrecoverable. But the Pentagon has a different understanding — and it’s ordering the California National Guard to claw back thousands of dollars paid to soldiers who re-enlisted to fight in Iraq and Afghanistan. And in many cases, an employer would also have a tough time arguing that decade-old lapses in its own oversight should trigger wage garnishments and tax liens against its workers. But again, this is the U.S. military, and its officials say the law requires them to reclaim the overpayments. That’s the gist of a report by The Los Angeles Times, which says nearly 10,000 soldiers are now scrambling to pay back signing bonuses that helped the Pentagon cope with the task of using an all-volunteer service to fight two prolonged international conflicts.

6am – E         Tech blogger finds proof DNC chief’s emails weren’t ‘doctored’ despite claims. (Fox News) — After Democratic Party boss Donna Brazile claimed emails showing her apparently tipping off Hillary Clinton to questions at a March town hall were “doctored,” tech sleuths got to work — and now say they’ve found proof the emails are authentic. Fox News’ Megyn Kelly questioned Brazile last week about an email that surfaced in hacked messages from Campaign Chairman John Podesta’s account. The email, posted by WikiLeaks and attributed to Brazile, passed on a question to campaign adviser Jennifer Palmieri about the death penalty, under the subject line: “From time to time I get questions in advance.” The exchange came right before a March town hall hosted by CNN and TV One, where a similar question was asked. Yet Brazile denied receiving questions from CNN.  “I have seen so many doctored emails. I have seen things that come from me at 2 in the morning that I don’t even send,” she said, adding, “I will not sit here and be persecuted, because your information is totally false.”  However, tech blog Errata Security quickly found the email in question could be verified using an everyday verification program.

7am – A/B/C Average Obamacare premiums to rise 22 percent. Obama administration confirms double-digit premium hikes. Obamacare shoppers in most states will see premiums rise by 22 percent and have 36 percent fewer plans to choose from next year, according to insurance plan data released Monday by the Obama administration. The buffet of 2017 plan options is decidedly smaller and pricier than in years past, prompting officials to stress the availability of federal subsidies for most consumers and the importance of shopping around for more affordable coverage. When the Affordable Care Act’s fourth enrollment season begins Nov. 1, consumers in the 38 states using the federal healthcare.gov marketplace will see median prices for the cheapest plans in the middle silver tier rise 16 percent. Average rates in those plans will rise by 25 percent and by 22 percent when factoring in three state-run marketplaces for which data were available.

7am – D         INTERVIEW — DAN MITCHELL – economist and senior fellow at the Cato Institute who specializes in fiscal policy, particularly tax reform, international tax competition, and the economic burden of government spending

  • Senate Antitrust Subcommittee to Probe AT&T-Time Warner Mega Deal.

7am – E         White House dodges on whether Obama will leave country under President Trump. (Politico) — President Barack Obama is campaigning to ensure that no one flees America because of a Donald Trump presidency, according to the White House. During a gaggle with reporters Monday aboard Air Force One, White House press secretary Josh Earnest said Obama would “spend a significant amount of time” campaigning for Hillary Clinton and other Democrats down the ballot next week. Earnest also was asked whether Obama would leave the country if Trump, a man he has said is unfit to succeed him, is elected president. “He’s working very hard to make sure that nobody has to leave the country as a result of an electoral outcome that the president doesn’t support,” Earnest said. Obama spoke at a Clinton fundraiser in California with about 350 guests earlier Monday.  He called for Trump to get crushed on Election Day. “Make sure she wins big. Send a message about who we are as a people, send a clear message about what America stands for,” he said. “We want to win big. We want to win big. We don’t want to just eke it out — particularly when the other guy’s already starting to gripe about the game is rigged.”

8am – A         INTERVIEW – KIM PROPEACK – Chief for Politics and Communications   Director of CASA in Action

  • CASA is also targeting voters in Prince William County, where more immigrants live and where Trump also has more support.
  • The immigrant advocates who are working to take down Comstock are modeling their efforts after a largely successful campaign last year to stir up anti-Trump sentiments in Prince William County in favor of Jeremy McPike (D-Prince William), who beat Manassas Mayor Harold “Hal” Parrish II, a Republican, in a race for an open state Senate seat. Several of the people who knocked on doors last week also were involved in the earlier campaign.
  • They crossed the border illegally, and can’t vote. But they can knock on doors.  (Washington Post) – Unable to vote in the presidential election, a group of undocumented immigrants is knocking on doors in Northern Virginia in support of Hillary Clinton and other Democratic candidates, convinced that the outcome of the vote will determine whether they can secure a path to citizenship in the country they have known since childhood. The vote-seekers are some of the 750,000 recipients of temporary legal status under the Obama administration’s 2012 Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. They are acutely aware that Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has pledged to deport the nation’s 11 million illegal immigrants and that under a GOP-controlled Congress, past attempts at immigration reform have failed.
