WASHINGTON — (WMAL) The principal at Bethesda Chevy Chase High School sent out a letter to parents this afternoon to tell them that some students became sick after taking prescription medicine.
According to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue, at least five students were evaluated. Four of those students were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening conditions and one student was released to a guardian.
Montgomery County Police say they are looking to see if this was intentional or accidental.
“Officers arrived on the scene and believed the students may have taken Xanax but we are not sure yet what they took,” said Officer Rick Goodale, Montgomery County Police spokesperson.
In her letter to parents, Principal Donna Jones said “the safety of all students is our first priority” and she urged families to call her with questions.
Police say they will want to find out how the students got the medicine, if it was not prescribed to them.
“Once officers determine that then they will go from there to see what action will be appropriate,” said Officer Goodale.
Principal Jones says the students transported to the hospital were taken there as a precaution.
