McLEAN, VA — (WMAL) He’s become one of the hottest quarterbacks in the NFL, and he has the Redskins in line for a return to the playoffs. Now, Kirk Cousins will put some of that star power to good use, working with the operators of the I-95 and Beltway Express lanes in Northern Virginia, along with local safety advocates and government agencies, to spread the gospel of safe driving.

Transurban, the private toll lane vendor, is debuting a new public safety campaign Tuesday to promote safe driving and to get people to stop texting while behind the wheel, and organizers are counting on Cousins’ high profile to help them to reach drivers in ways that public safety agencies can’t.

“He’s a widely recognized sports figure here in the D.C. region,” says Transurban spokesman Mike McGurk. “We think he’s going to be especially effective in helping us reach some of our target audiences with these messages.”

McGurk says the DC region has a lot of folks tied to their phones for their jobs, and folks who spend a lot of time commuting. He says that’s “a recipe for disaster.”

Details of the campaign will be released Tuesday evening, but McGurk says Cousins will be the face of the campaign, aimed at “putting a dent into distracted driving on roads over the next couple of years.”
