Macy’s Announces Store Closings, Including Alexandria Mall

Macy's is kicking off its Black Friday sales at 5:00 pm on Thanksgiving Day, an hour earlier than the prior two years. For shoppers who don't want to rush their turkey dinner, they can still get in on the sales frenzy. Most Macy's stores will stay open until 2:00 am. They will then close for four hours and reopen at 6:00 am for Black Friday.

CINCINNATI — (WMAL) Macy’s announced today that it is closing 68 stores, including one at the Landmark Mall in Alexandria which opened in 1965.

These closures were included in a plan announced in August 2016 to close 100 stores.

The company expects to save $550 million annually due to this change.

It will also be cutting 10,000 jobs. 3,900 workers will be displaced after store closures, and another 6,200 jobs will be cut as the company reorganizes its management team.

Macy’s said that it is closing stores in order to “bolster the company’s strategy to further invest in omnichannel capabilities, improve customer experience and create shareholder value.”

“Our omnichannel strategies continue to evolve based on the changes in our customers’ shopping behaviors, including a focus on buy online, pickup in store and mobile-enabled shopping. In addition, we have invested in and enlarged our customer data and analytics team, which will help drive our new marketing strategies for 2017. Whether it is improving corporate agility, enhancing our customer engagement strategies, or continuing to capitalize on the potential value of our real estate assets, we remain focused on the actions that will ultimately improve our financial results and provide the greatest return for our shareholders,”  CEO Terry J. Lundgren said in a press release.
