ACCOKEEK, MD — (WMAL) 67-year-old James Hill was killed Thursday night when his minivan was struck by a speeding car in Accokeek.

Thursday night police said the accident may have been caused by illegal drag racing, but Friday morning a police spokesperson told WMAL they no longer believe that was the case. The police department is trying to determine the cause of the crash.

Prince George’s County police say the car t-boned the minivan as it pulled onto Indian Head Highway at Pine Drive just before 9 p.m. The van’s driver was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.

The car’s driver was also hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.

Witnesses told investigators that at least three vehicles were seen speeding and weaving through traffic in the area just before the crash.

Indian Head Highway remained closed all night long, and reopened shortly after 5 am.

While this accident is not believed to have been caused by drag racing, illegal street racing has been an issue in parts of Prince George’s County for decades.

Thursday night’s accident took place at the same intersection where eight people were killed during a drag race in 2008.
