Listen as Larry speaks with Jeanne Mancini, President of The March for Life, regarding Charlie Gard, a terminally ill infant whose family is fighting to keep him alive.
During the interview, O’Connor asked Mancini how The March For Life is assisting in the Charlie Gard fight:
O’Connor: Your great organization has jumped on board the efforts here for Charlie Gard. Tell me about that. What are you doing for these parents?
Mancini: Well, you know, essentially, we thought this week… well we know that there is power in numbers and if we can just encourage the hospital and you know the U.K. government to think about this a little bit differently that there could be a real change here, a real change of heart. So that’s our hope, that’s our prayer. So we started a major social media campaign yesterday and a petition that we can deliver to the hospital with requests from people in the United States and really around the world asking them to reconsider this situation. So, I think it’s important to say, look we’re praying for a miracle here and the first miracle that we’re praying for is a complete healing of little Charlie and he’s really got a terminal illness. He’s got a mitochondrial depletion syndrome that he was born with. And it’s just heartbreaking. But we’re also praying for a second miracle, which is the freedom that his parents will be able to decide how to treat their little boy. And that shouldn’t need to be a miracle, right? With healthcare systems and especially if we are debating healthcare here in the United States. It brings to mind all of these different ethical questions about the end of life and who has the right to decide when treatment should be ended ect. And so really what we’re doing here is asking the hospital to reconsider their position.
