WASHINGTON — (WMAL) If you plan on viewing the partial solar eclipse on Monday, August 21, check out these tips for a safe and enjoyable experience:

• Do not look directly at the sun without approved solar-viewing devices. Ordinary sunglasses should not be used as a replacement.
• Inspect your solar filter before use; if scratched or damaged, discard it.
• Always supervise children using solar filters.
• Do not look at the sun through a camera, a telescope, binoculars or any other optical device while using your eclipse glasses or hand-held solar viewer- the concentrated solar rays will damage the filter and enter your eye(s).
• If driving during the eclipse, do not pull over alongside the road and do not wear glasses while driving. Plan ahead and stop.
• August days can bring heat. Stay hydrated! Extreme heat related deaths and illnesses are preventable.
• August is peak wildfire season. Know the fire risks and respect fire restrictions.
• Use designated camping areas only.
• Pack sunscreen. Although some sun rays will be blocked during a short period, you will probably be exposed to sunlight in waiting.
• Be patient and don’t expect all services to be available.
