WASHINGTON (WMAL) — Dulles International and Baltimore-Washington International airports are seeing record numbers of people flying internationally.

For the 13th month in a row, total traffic was up at Dulles. In June of 2017, 2.2 million people passed through the airport, which is a 6.8 percent increase from June of 2016.

Aviation Pros reported 2.4 million passengers traveled through BWI in June of 2017, which is a 5 percent increase from June of 2016. Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan said this is a new record for June passenger traffic at the airport.

June of 2017 was the 24th straight month that BWI saw a record number of passengers.

Metropolitan Washington Airport’s Authority (which represents Dulles and Reagan National airports) spokesperson Kimberly Gibbs said
more people are flying internationally as existing carriers, like United, offer more service than they used to, while other carriers, like Air India and China, are offering service from the airports for the first time.

A better economy and the fact that lots of people take summer vacations in June also contributed to the increased air traffic at Dulles according to Gibbs. She said Dulles is always looking to attract new international carriers, and they’re hoping those efforts will keep passenger numbers up.
