Toll System Testing Underway on I-66 Inside Beltway

FALLS CHURCH, VA — Virginia is testing its new toll system that will open up Interstate 66 inside the Capital Beltway during rush hour to solo drivers by the end of the year.

The Virginia Department of Transportation says drivers should expect to see flashing lights on the signs that will be used to inform drivers of the variable toll to be imposed on solo drivers.

Currently, only carpools of two or more are allowed to use the highway inside the beltway during rush hour. Beginning in December, the road will open to toll-paying inbound solo drivers during the morning rush and outbound solo drivers during the evening.

Carpools of two or more will still be able to use the highway for free. Beginning in 2022, carpools will have to be three or more.
