Park Police Arrest Vandal at Lincoln Memorial

WASHINGTON — (WMAL) A 21-year-old man was arrested and charged with ‘malicious destruction of property,’ after vandalizing the Lincoln Memorial on Monday.

According to the United States Park Police (USPP) , Nurtilek Bakirov, of the Kyrgyz Republic, was caught engraving “HYPT MAEK” with a penny into the fifth pillar on the north side of the memorial.

The maximum fine for this charge could be up to 10 years in prison and a fine up to $25,000.

The National Park Service conservation team is in the process of determining the best way to address the damage.
